Heel countersinks are support materials used in the heel area of shoes to enhance stability and improve wearing comfort by preventing shoe deformation. They are made from three types of materials: leather pulp, chemical sheets, and hot melt adhesive. They are bonded and positioned using processes such as water softening, solvent softening, or heat softening, and are widely used in the manufacture of all types of footwear, including children's, women's, and men's shoes.

According to the material, toe caps are generally divided into the following three types:

(1) Leather pulp toe caps - softened by soaking in water. This type of toe cap uses cowhide midsole leather as the material, which is also the softening method used in the past when leather shoes were handmade. Italian leather shoes are trapped in traditional thinking and often use this type of toe caps which is not economically viable.

(2) Chemical sheet toe caps - softened by soaking in a solvent (toluene). This type of toe cap can be softened by soaking in a solvent and is one of the revolutionary shoe materials in the shoe industry in recent years. Its characteristic is that it becomes very soft after being soaked in solvent, which is most conducive to shoe molding. No additional or reinforcing treatment is required. After drying and cooling, it can achieve a stiff effect, which is the most commonly used method in the shoe industry. Advantages: Inexpensive, easy to mold. Disadvantages: Thicker, longer molding time, and the worst elasticity.

(3) Hot melt adhesive backing ----- using the heating softening method: using heating (about 100-120 degrees Celsius) to soften the "hot melt adhesive" pre-pressed on the front lining of the shoe, so as to facilitate the molding of the backing. Advantages: Fast, thinner, and better elasticity than ordinary backings. Disadvantages: Higher molding difficulty, and the heat is not easy to control. In addition, iron sheets and other special materials are also used as backings when making hiking boots and safety shoes.
